To activate this, press the ` key. (left of the number 1)

It looks to be for experimental or debugging purposes as the HELP function reveals only three possible commands: echo, set and show. Of course it is entirely possible that other commands do exist but aren’t documented in the HELP function.

A popup command line option in a news aggregator GUI is an interesting concept and can be useful for quickly adding feeds and folders or sending commands to change feed display settings. I’d love to use something like this to set ad hoc filters.

If anyone knows what this is there for, I’d love to hear more about it. If you’re hacking away at the shell and discover something cool, do share.

There is someone home!

It looked as if Bloglines was abandoned by its parents but what do you know? It ain’t dead yet! Today the new Bloglines is unveiled.

For a long time now the service not only was losing steam but also many of its devout users. Google Reader won over many defectors while others went to the various customizable start pages. I kept using Bloglines all along putting up with the stale UI and the 200 item feed limit because no other free aggregator service had a more complete set of features or did a better job of keeping them both in sync.

The main new features in this beta are:

A customizable, drag-and-drop Start Page

Quick, full and 3-pane views

Drag-and-drop feed management

There were other changes to the service and it does look like a “beta”. For example, many existing features, such as Keep New, Rename Folder and general options and settings, are missing from the beta. I hope the purpose of this beta is to feature the new UI and not the full capabilities of the service. For now, I can switch back to the older UI to get to all the features.

This new release is exciting news for existing Bloglines users and will certainly win back some defectors and attract new users. I look forward to seeing it fully implemented.
